A worksheet for retailers and brands

Cat scratcher sourcing checklist

Turn a product shortlist into a sample and quotation brief. Use this worksheet to record what you need, compare the answers and keep undecided details visible.

Request sample costs

Start with a reference, quantity and destination. You can ask about samples before deciding every packaging detail. If you are comparing several products, use the range planner to keep your choices together, then continue to an enquiry.

Choose the order route

Match your brief to the change you want. Options, minimum quantities and costs are confirmed for the selected product on your quotation. The OEM and ODM guide explains the routes in more detail.

RouteWhat to include in your brief
The current rangeProduct reference, exact variant, quantity and destination.
Your logo and packagingLogo placement, unit-pack format, barcode and carton-label requirements.
Your colours and patternColour references, pattern artwork and the surfaces you want to change.
Your own designDrawing or sample, intended dimensions, materials and the features that matter to your range.

Your buying brief

Print this sheet and fill in the spaces. For multiple references, make a separate copy per variant. A blank means you still need an answer; it does not mean an option is included.

Compare the same specification

A product's assembled dimensions and the dimensions of its packed unit answer different questions. Record both when shelf space, a gift box or parcel size matters. Ask for pieces per outer carton, outer-carton dimensions and gross weight separately. Use the carton data guide when you compare packing.

For cardboard scratchers, name the board construction you want to discuss and the surfaces you want printed. Keep any material declaration or test request tied to the exact reference. The specification guide covers the board and sample questions; the market documents guide helps you frame the document request.

If replacement pads matter to your range

Ask whether the exact replacement pad can be quoted separately. Record its reference, dimensions, pads per pack, order quantity and packaging. Ask how its fit to the chosen base will be checked on a sample. A removable pad alone does not tell you whether a separately orderable refill pack meets your buying requirements.

Use the pads, boxes and refills collection to identify formats to discuss. Keep compatibility and replenishment questions specific to the base and pad you intend to order.

Before approving a sample

  • Record the exact reference, variant and sample date so later discussions refer to the same item.
  • Compare assembled size, construction, printed artwork and the pack-out against your written brief.
  • Photograph the unit packaging and any point you want changed. Record acceptance or a requested revision for each point.
  • For a base and replacement pad, check the intended fit and replacement action together.
  • Keep document requests separate from visual checks. Looking at a sample does not establish compliance with your market's requirements.

Before comparing quotations

Check whether the price is per piece or per set, what is included, the currency and validity, and the quantity and order route it applies to. Compare the same packaging, freight and tax basis. Record sample charges, any agreed sample credit, production timing and the document scope in the written quotation.

Mark each open item with the answer you need before the next decision. A short, specific brief makes it easier to discuss a useful sample or quotation than a request for the whole catalogue.
