How private label and packaging actually work

Private label runs in six steps. You choose a product, agree what changes, send artwork and approve a proof. A physical sample is approved before production, and the goods are packed and labelled in the format you chose.

In three lines.
ODM is a product from the current range in your branding. OEM is a product built to your own drawing or sample.
Six steps run from choosing the product to labelled cartons, with a sample approved before production starts.
Artwork cost and the minimum for your route are confirmed on your quotation.

What OEM and ODM mean

Buyers use the two words as if they meant one thing, and then order the wrong route. The two differ in one place only: where the design comes from.

ODM starts from a product Baiwei Pets already designed. You take it from the current range, then change the colour, the pattern, the packaging or the label on it.

OEM starts from your own drawing or your own sample. The shape is yours, and Baiwei Pets develops it into a product that can be made, packed and shipped.

The six steps

Choose the product

Start from a product in the current range, or send a drawing or a sample of your own.

You decide which product the range is built around.

Agree what changes

Colour, pattern, packaging and label are agreed one at a time, and each one is written into the quotation.

You decide what stays as it is.

Send artwork

Send your logo and your packaging artwork, with your barcode numbers.

You decide what the pack has to show.

Approve a proof, then a sample

The artwork is checked with you first, and the finished product comes back as a physical sample.

You decide whether both are right to work from.

Production

Production runs against the sample you approved, and that sample is the reference for the run.

You decide whether to appoint your own inspection.

Packing and labelling

Goods are packed in the format you chose, and labels are applied before shipment.

You decide export cartons, retail packaging or your own barcode.

What changes on the packaging

Packaging is agreed as one of three formats. The format you pick changes the artwork you send and the carton that ships.

  • Bulk carton. Export cartons only, with no retail pack around the piece.
  • Individual retail packaging. A printed box around each piece, in the format the product already uses.
  • Retail packaging with your artwork. Your own design on the pack, carrying your barcode and the text your market asks for.

Labels are applied before shipment where an order needs them.

Your artwork and your brand

Send only logos, images, characters and names that you own or have written permission to use. Your brand and your artwork stay yours, and Baiwei Pets uses them only to quote, to proof and to produce your order. If a design looks like it belongs to someone else, the desk will ask before anything is printed.

Your own label on a product from the current range does not transfer the design behind it. A shape Baiwei Pets designed stays a Baiwei Pets design.

The two figures that come back with your quotation

The cost of artwork and packaging work is confirmed on your quotation. The minimum for each order route is confirmed on your quotation.

Ordering details

An order takes one of four routes.

  • A sample.
  • A product from the current range.
  • The same product in your own packaging.
  • A product developed to your design.

The minimum for each route is confirmed on your quotation.

Several products are shown in more than one colour, and some carry a printed pattern.

Documents for your market are arranged with your order and named on your quotation. See which documents apply to your market.

Prices are quoted per enquiry. Your quotation and proforma name the contracting seller. Bank details are issued once, on the proforma, and never changed by email. Call the number on the site before paying a changed account.

What to confirm on your quotation.
  • Sample cost is confirmed on your quotation, and a sample credit, if offered, is agreed on the quotation and shown on the proforma.
  • Which file types to send, and the packaging format itself, are confirmed on your quotation.
  • Production time, transit time and the shipping mode are confirmed on your quotation.
  • Colours and patterns beyond those shown on a product page are confirmed on your quotation.
  • Which documents exist for the exact product is confirmed on your quotation.
